The Windows Phone 8 Decision

Can WP8 really replace an Android or iOS phone? I know the dearth of apps will throw off many, yours truly included, but what are some actual problems with the OS itself?

I'm coming from a power user standpoint, so my gripes may not mesh with everyone elses.  Take note though, that many of the problems will truly annoy someone who expects thing to just work.

One thing I don't make mention of is, if you're in the Google ecosystem and you want to switch to Microsoft's beloved new mobile OS, be prepared to leave your old home behind. Of the third party Google apps you find, none of them will function half as well as they do on all the other OS's. That includes Blackberry 10, which at least uses an Android emulator to get by.

So let's say your fine leaving Google behind and swimming in Redmond's great pond. Read on for the current rules you must abide by.

1. Emails don't download images automatically. Must manually set to download images, which sometimes fails.
2. Monthly calendar view displays gibberish text. Must go into agenda view for any useful information.
3. No weekly view in the calendar.
4. No Searching directly in the calendar (need third party app)
(Third party calendars can't edit or add new  items to exchange calendars, so they are not a solution)
5. No forward button in IE. Yes, you can use history, but this is slower than just having a button for it.
6. No Easy Phone Backup/Migration
7. No Free File Explorer (shouldn't have to pay for a function this critical)
8. Can't adjust volume levels for voice, system, media, etc. in one place
9. No App like Tasker to automatically change system settings: Wi-Fi, sounds, display timeout, etc.
10. Search button not contextual, only launches Bing search. Even if contextual, there should be a choice of search engines.
11. Can't Easily change between silent, vibrate, and normal sound using volume buttons
12. No custom ringtones for messages.
13. No ability to lock screen orientation.
14. Can't download podcasts over 50mb directly to the phone *unless* it's plugged into the mains and on Wi-Fi
15. Can't truly disable location tracking. http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2392266,00.asp
16. Can't attach full size images to email. The app automatically compresses them.
17. Can't fine tune display brightness. Stuck with low, medium, high, or auto.
18. No customizable shortcuts in camera app.
19. No  Call Blocker or SMS filter app.
20. No HDMI Out
21. No USB OTG
